Life as a parent, it has its ups and downs. Some days are legendary, and some are, well, not so memorable. But one thing is universal, we all love a good old moan about our kids. You know, to let everyone know just how little sleep we’re getting and exactly how tough it is (often in minute detail).
What nobody goes around saying is just how blissful it really is. That all the tough parts are worth every single second. You actually learn not to sweat the small stuff. No matter how hard it is, the little things about being a parent keep us fulfilled.
Here are 10 things that get us through to lunchtime each day with sanity (and smile) intact:
1 Some mornings you’ve done the equivalent of a day’s work before you even leave the house, but it’s the kiss, hug and smile you get when you leave them at the school gate that leaves you feeling like your heart could almost burst.
2 When you look around the house and it resembles a house that could have been burgled. Then, you take it all in and it makes you smile: a teddy bear picnic in one corner, a half-drawn picture of a smiley sun on the table, raisins in the shape of a rainbow all over the floor…
3 When you get yourself up, showered, dressed, get them washed, dressed, fed and to school, in time…. and there’s enough time left before work to grab your favourite takeaway coffee.
4 When that miraculous car space right beside the school gate is empty as you zip in.
5 When you reach into your handbag and find a picture your little one put there to remind you of them when you don’t see them all day.
6 When you get that window of pure peace – cuppa in hand and chance to catch up with your favourite programme = bliss.
7 When the supermarket delivery guy knocks on the door – the instant visualisation of you frantically driving a trolley around the aisles makes you feel oh-so relieved (and a teensy bit smug).
8 When you suddenly remember the cute, funny thing your toddler told you that morning – “I like wearing my shoes the wrong way” or “Can we go to the shops this morrow?”
9 When you find all your child’s teddy bears tucked up in bed.
10 When you realise you couldn’t wait to get a breather from the kids, and when you have it, you miss them madly and can’t wait to see the little rascals again.
