DIY sensory play foam

Got work to do, but your toddler is climbing the walls – and stairs, tables, sofa, beds etc?

You need this super-easy two-ingredient sensory play foam in your life.

All you need is a tin of cooked chickpeas – actually, the water the chickpeas are sitting in is what you are looking for (keep the chickpeas for dinner!) and some food colouring and you are good to go.

Check out how Instagram user LekMedMini is making this super-easy sensory play foam:

Just whisk the chickpea water (which is actually called aquafaba) until soft peaks form in the foam – almost as if you were whisking eggwhites.

Now add food colouring of your choice, and voila. All you need is to add small toys, or figurines for your little one to play with and you are good to go!

A Little Science

  • Aquafaba is still a bit of a mystery in the science world. Its amazing properties didn’t really come to light until a few years ago. It is the result of soaking and cooking legumes
  • Aquafaba is composed of polysaccharides (starch), sucrose (sugar), proteins, and saponins. Saponins are a compound with the ability to create a soap-like foam.
  • Like eggs, it can act as a binder and can also whip into a foam, trapping air and giving structure.
