Baby Name Regret – What Happens When You Pick The Wrong Name?

Amanda Cassidy

A survey last year found that one in five of us regret choosing the name we gave our baby.

Turns out this “namer’s remorse” is a real phenomenon and many of us would actually pick a different name for our child given the choice.

According to the Guardian  – the names most frequently regretted were Charlotte, Amelia, Anne, Daniel, Jacob, James and Thomas.

Out of the 250 mums who regretted the names they gave their children – 12 per cent always knew it was the wrong choice and 23 per cent of us only started feeling the regret once our child started playschool.

We have at least 9 months to get the right name. Do we struggle because it is such a huge responsibility and we want to make sure we get it right? Or is it because we feel pressured to use a family name or a partners choice?

Some women panic after the birth announcement but this can often be an element of post-partum anxiety and a way to feel some control over a situation that is mostly uncontrollable.

And some simply go ahead and change it.

Australian Mama Blogger, Sophie Cachia did just that.

8 days after taking to social media to announce the birth of her daughter, Betty – she posted an update from big brother Bobby:

“I’ve been given the gig today to formally RE-introduce my little sister. Mum & Dad say her name is apparently Florence, but me being the boss two-year old I am, have chosen to nickname her Flossy which is really sticking (for me anyway).”

We love both names!

We have heard more and more people who are finding it tough to come to terms with the name they have given their baby. So do you go ahead and change it or do you simply learn to love it?

We would love to hear your thoughts!
