Setting eyes on your tiny newborn for the first time is a magical memory most mums take for granted, but for Kathy Beitz, who has been blind since the age of 11, the moment she fist saw her son was also the first time in 18 years she had seen another human being.
Thanks to a pair of special glasses developed by eSight, the young mum, who suffers from macular degeneration, was able to be one of the first to see baby Aksel on the day he was born.
The glasses, worth over €13,000, combine a camera, display technology, and advanced computing to deliver a real-time video that enables sight for people with vision loss. Because the family did not have health insurance, eSight gave Beitz the glasses for free, making her one of only 140 people to own a pair.
“For the first baby that I get to actually look at being my own is very overwhelming, and even to look at my husband looking at him was just such a good feeling.” said the 29-year-old Canadian,
“I got to fall in love with him.”
