While there is vast agreement that breastfeeding is as great as great can be, it also quite clearly exists a shift in attitude when someone admits they are still breastfeeding past a certain age.
The World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding until the child is at least two, but the vast majority of women stop long before that.
Which might explain why it always grabs headlines when somebody admits to still breastfeeding past the baby-phase and into the toddler years.
Recently Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, discussed in an interview with Katie Couric a magazine article where she had mentioned that she still breastfeeds her 2-year-old son Hadrien – and the reactions that had generated.
"My daily life is mostly spent with my three kids and raising them," she told Couric.
And as for the extended breastfeeding? "I think that it’s a woman’s choice," she said. "I breastfed my three babies. I also gave them formula. I don't judge what your decision is."
Well, we for one love her answer.
(Wow! How pretty are Canada's First Family?!)
Grégoire-Trudeau added that she tries to stay informed about women's health, and that reading medical studies has influenced her decision.
"There are the scientific facts that prove that breast milk is amazing," she said. "So if I can continue to feed my child, even if he's 2, I'm not going to stop if he wants it."Explore more on these topics:
