‘Having children is not a disability’: 24-year-old woman hits out at ‘mum privilege’

Do parents think they have it harder than anyone else?

One writer thinks so - and hasn't held back in saying so. Jessica Lindsay, a 24-year-old childless woman, is fed up of what she calls 'mum privilege'. In an opinion piece for Metro under the headline 'No you can’t go to the front of the queue just because you’re a parent' she takes mums and dads who think they deserve special treatment to task. The article is in response to a meme that went viral recently. The image shows a woman holding a sign that reads;

'Moms should get a fast pass to the front of the line at coffee shops. ‘Honey, you’re 22 & slept 10 hours last night? Get to the back of the line.’

Jessica says that parents shouldn't think they're any more deserving of anything than others.

"The person behind you who works 70 hours a week deserves their place as well, as does the retired person behind them."

There is, she continues, a "level of entitlement emanating" from some parents who believe their life is tougher than anyone else's. Jessica argues that becoming a parent is a choice that people make freely and so they shouldn't expect sympathy.
