How about letting her make her own decisions?

Breastfeeding continues to be a controversial topic worldwide. Whether it’s about where you feed your baby, how you feed your baby, or how long you feed your baby, people always seem to have something to say.

With huge numbers of mums coming out in support of public breastfeeding, the taboo is slowly but surely being stamped out.

However, there is still a lot of judgement for mums who choose to breastfeed their children for longer than two years.

Coco Austin talked to OK! Magazine about how she still breastfeeds her daughter, Coco Chanel, who will be three in November. And not only that but she plans to breastfeed for a lot longer – even until Chanel is ten.

“I love it! I’m going to be one of those mothers, and I hate to say it. [Chanel will] be, like, ten years old, and I’ll be on the computer and she’ll grab my boob. I just love it so much. It’s just the moment after holding her, and she’s needing me. I like that power that I have over her. She needs my boob. When she doesn’t need my boob, she doesn’t need me. I’m just like, let her have it.”

She went into the reasons behind her continuing to breastfeed, saying that it was not so much about nutrition, as Chanel eats solid foods now.

“It’s more of a comfort thing. She needs me more of those times when she wants mommy, or the nap times, or going to bed … I don’t have a set date [on when I’ll stop]. I feel like, when she’s old enough, [she’ll say], ‘you know what, Mom, I don’t need this anymore.”

More and more mums are getting on board with the idea of their child self-weaning, however that didn’t stop people having their say.

One user commented “What the what?!?”, with another claiming that “that’s just wrong”.

Coco Austin said that she has been told to only breastfeed her daughter for two years, but she is sick of advice like that. She says that elsewhere it is completely normal to breastfeed your child until they decide that they want to stop.

“In European cities, they’re breastfeeding until 7-, 8-years-old. I get females all around the world telling me that this is something that’s not weird.”

Of course people will continue to insist on having their say. But as long as Coco and her daughter are happy, that should be all that matters.
