2016 was, without a doubt, the year of the hipster.
Love them or loathe them, hipsters and their hipster ways were everywhere.
And no more so than in Brooklyn, New York – as some may know as the hipster capital of the world and home to hipster trends like a DJ school for babies and the “babyccino.”
And now, according to The Cut, those bearded 30somethings have kicked off a whole new level of hipstery behaviour, namely urging children to call their fathers ‘papa’ instead of ‘dad’ or ‘daddy.’
According to the website, this compares to the recent rise of the word ‘mama’ – often used by Instagram-mums and ‘other affluent white urban parents’ (and, cough, us here at HerFamily). Some dads who have adopted the moniker “papa” do so, apparently, because they feel it sets them apart from fathers of a previous generation, including their own.
“I just think ‘dad’ and ‘mom’ are very Saved by the Bell-ish,” Will Grose, 36, a Brooklyn father of three boys under the age of 5: Axel, Oscar (“Ozzy”), and Balthazar (“Bo” explains, and estimated that approximately half of the children in his 4-year-old son’s Williamsburg preschool call their fathers “papa.”
What do YOU think, dads? Are you ready for ‘papa’ yet? Or are you not that hipster by a mile? Let us know in the comments or tweet us at @Herfamilydotie
