It’s the weekend and rumour has it, there are a few of those nasty little showers looming. Have no fear. You will NOT be stuck indoors lamenting the Summer you never had. We’ve rounded-up four cracking events to go to with the kids.
Doggie Do in Merrion Square, Dublin – September 12th, 10am – 6pm
Why go? The festival premieres this weekend and is set to be a ‘Mardi Gras for Mutt and Man’. Doggies can go as they please in most venues, so a festival was the next natural step in contemporary canine fun. In the evening at 7pm, an outdoor screening of the Disney classic ‘Lady and the Tramp’ will ramp up the level of excitement. With the weather set to stay overcast and rain-less (the dream), you can bring the dog and the kids sans stress. Whoot – or woof, even.
What’s cool? There is a ‘Dog of Dublin Award’ hosted by human stylist, Darren Kennedy. There’s also talks, games and events your family and prized pooch can do together. Yep. I know all the good stuff.
How much? Family tickets based on two adults and two kids, €25. Furry friends go free.
2. Trust Music and awareness day
Trust Family Day, St Stephen’s Green Park (Harcourt Street entrance) – September 12th, 10am – 6pm
Why go? This week is National Suicide Prevention week. How better to spend the afternoon than by supporting a local event promoting awareness.
What’s cool? Bring a picnic, a fleecy blanket and a flask of breakfast tea to enjoy brilliant bands like Interskalactic, The Tolka Hot Club, The Bionic Rats and Mr Upfull for early birds attending. And for the night owls? There is an after party in Pacino’s on Suffolk Street with the Disco Doctor.
How much? Free. Yes, free.
Dun Laoghaire Underground Film Festival, Royal Marine Hotel – September 12th and 13th.
Why go? There is something for film buffs and all the family at this cool festival with short films, documentaries, features, workshops and chats with actors among the programme listings. Fun (and educational) times.
What’s cool? Plan it now so the in-laws can take the kids for an hour, and mum and dad can opt for an indoor flick and a little timeout. Suggestion? Enjoy Al Pacino’s superb performance in the ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ screening on Sunday.
How much? Tickets from €5. A VIP festival pass is €80. Cool.
Poetry day for young kids in Stillorgan Library (off the N11) – September 12th 10.30am – 12.30am.
Why go? This event is directed at mums and very little ones to begin their journey through the pages.
What’s cool? Parents and carers can meet up with Sarah Keating (the resident bookworm), to chat about which books are best for young readers. Everyone gets a complimentary ‘baby book bag’ to take home.
How much? Free. Just register via stillorganlib@dlrcoco.ie
Not for you? If this list doesn’t float your boat head to the ‘Improve your Home‘ show on in the Citywest, Dublin, or the Tea and Coffee Festival in the RDS. A little DIY or TLC will always do it.
