Gift-giving can be fraught at the best of times, which is why it’s always better to be clear about what you want.

Mums get lots of interesting pressies from their families and while we cherish the drawings and homemade gifts the most, it’s probably worth being vocal when there’s something you do want.

Katherine Heigl, a woman after our own hearts, has said that she told her family exactly what she wanted to do for Mother’s Day this year.

She, husband Josh Kelley, daughters Naleigh, seven, Adelaide, six, and son Joshua, one, spent the day together doing just what she wanted to do.

It took the stress out of the day for her kids and husband and ensured that she wasn’t going to be disappointed, she said.

“My Mother’s Day was perfect this year,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Let me tell you why…because I told @joshbkelley and the kids exactly what I wanted and what I was expecting. That may seem a little… unromantic but it saves my kids and husband the stress of trying to read my mind, it saves me any disappointment that my mind was not properly read and it ensures my day is exactly what I hoped for!”

Her Mother’s Day, she wrote, “started with cards, flowers and candy.

“Next a delicious brunch, then a little walk and picture taking among the apple blossoms with two incredibly photogenic daughters and one cranky son.

“Next came gelato which was enjoyed at @louboutinworld while I picked out my gift from @joshbkelley. I chose the most gorgeous pair of pink sparkly Cinderella heels! Heavenly, heavenly, heavenly!”

We reckon she’s dead right. Fed up of getting the same perfume for every special occasion? Just say so – your other half will understand and it’s no loss on your kids, who can keep giving you things fashioned out of old toilet rolls that they’ve made in school, so everyone’s happy.
