If your kid starts limping suddenly, it could be this common childhood health complaint

It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of transient synovitis.

One mum is raising awareness about this common health issue that caused her daughter to stop walking.

Angela Angers is opening up about her daughter’s transient synovitis diagnosis to help other parents notice the signs.

One morning Angela’s daughter developed a limp and couldn’t move so was forced to crawl around. She told her mum that her legs hurt and couldn’t put weight on her leg.

The mum rushed her to the doctor where she was told her daughter was suffering from something called transient synovitis.

According to Children’s Hospital Colorado, “Transient synovitis is an inflammation in the hip joint that causes pain, limp, and sometimes refusal to bear weight. This occurs in pre-pubescent children and is the most common cause of hip pain. It occurs when a viral infection, such as an upper respiratory infection, moves to and settles in the hip joint.”

The condition can be extremely alarming and frightening for parents, but it’s important to remember that it is only temporary. It tends to last between 7 and 10 days.

The cause of transient synovitis is unknown.

The condition is most common in children between the ages of 2 and 8. Boys tend to be more affected by girls, but the health issues tend to occur in children who previously suffer from a viral infection or virus.

Signs of the health condition include a limp, a struggle to put weight on legs, low-grade fever, previous viral infection, and pain in the hips, thigh, and groin.

Angela said her daughter stopped walking on Monday but she was back to her normal self by Sunday of the same week.

The mum told Today Parents: “This really scary thing just kind of went away. Probably the most difficult part was—how do you keep a still toddler entertained. There were a lot of movies and colouring going on for a couple of days.”

“We went back to the doctor for a few more visits just to make sure, because I’m a first-time mom and I’m a bit overcautious, but she recovered just fine.”

Doctors have stressed that transient synovitis causes no long-term side effects.
