Mama sings the blues: I took part in Pram Jam’s virtual choir session this morning

Melissa Carton

Sure what else would you be doing of a Friday morning?

I’ve been performing in choirs since I was around six years old.

Personally I think my family signed me up to my first choir so I could go to practice for awhile and stop signing A Whole New World around the house on repeat.

I’ve sung in other capacities, but my favourite has always been choral singing. I think it’s the harmonies or something, I just love being part of a choir.

Last year I noticed a new choir had sprung up and for once it was within travel distance of me, The Pram Jam Singers.

Getting up to a physical had been on my to-do list and then quarantine happened, so that cut my plans short.

Luckily for me Pram Jam have begun doing virtual choir sessions through Zoom and today I put a little time aside this morning and joined them for what I hope is the first of many practices with them.

The Pram Jam Singers is a choir aimed at parents and minders to enjoy some singing time while getting to know other parents or minders, so it’s a very child friendly space.

During the video call there was lots of babies and kids which actually made me feel more comfortable because usually when I’m taking a video call I’m stressed that the kids will bust in but in this situation it really didn’t matter. Bust in all you want kids.

During today’s session we went through two songs, a classic song and a more contemporary one so it was a nice mix.

The session lasted 40 minutes, as that is as long as you can do on Zoom and is for singers of all levels. During the sing along everyone is muted on screen except for the conductor so you don’t have to worry about not coming in at the right time or if your child starts asking for snacks, you can take it completely at your own pace.

I really enjoyed my session today and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a choral outlet while in lock down.

The Pram Jam Singers meet on Zoom every Friday morning at 10am and you can get access to their Zoom code by messaging them via Facebook.
