Calls to give children with dyslexia additional time for exams

Kat O'Connor

Should students with dyslexia be granted additional time for exams?

Dyslexia Ireland has called for pupils with dyslexia to be given extra time for exams.

Ahead of  Dyslexia Awareness Month in October, the organisation said it is not fair to give all pupils the same amount of time.

Those with learning disabilities are not being treated with the respect they deserve. They’re also being limited when it comes to showing their own skills and talents because their issues are being ignored.

Dyslexia Ireland called on the Government to make essential changes now.

They said both the State Examinations Commission (SEC) and Department of Education are dragging their feet.

The limited time means pupils are “unable to fully demonstrate their knowledge and ability”

In a statement, the organisation said there should be additional time in both the Junior Cert, as well as the Leaving Cert.

“The accommodation of extra time is not currently available for dyslexic students in Junior and Leaving Cert exams, putting them at a significant disadvantage.

“The introduction of extra time as an accommodation for those who need it would help level the playing field and ensure students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties reach their potential in state exams.”

“As each year passes without the option of extra time, thousands of dyslexic students are disadvantaged and have to continue to struggle on the most important days of their education,” Dyslexia Ireland added.

The team at Dyslexia Ireland have urged the public to contact their local TDs and Senators about this issue. You can learn more here.
