Why a shopping centre is EVERY maternity leave mum’s BFF

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Cool and shaded in the summer, warm and dry in the winter and with coffee shops in every direction… is it any wonder that the local shopping centre is every maternity leave mama’s favourite hang-out?

Here are six reasons to take your buggy and baba to Liffey Valley:

1. It’s easy to park

When you have a short window to shop while baby naps in the stroller, time is of the essence; the last thing you want to do is waste precious minutes faffing about in the parking lot. Not only does Liffey Valley have an abundance of free parking spaces (3,500 in fact!), they also have a handy tool to show you the best spot to park in for specific stores and Parent and Baby Parking near all mall entrances.

2. It’s paradise for coffee lovers

With Insomnia, Costa, BB’s and Butler’s ready and waiting to hand you a steaming hot latte the minute you walk through the door, the coffee alone is enough to entice the average new mum to the local shopping mall.

3. The facilities are mum-centric

Liffey Valley boasts five dedicated baby changing rooms designed with not only the parent, but also the child in mind. Clean and spacious, there is ample space to comfortably fit a buggy and your shopping bags while you change a nappy.

4. There’s privacy if you need it

While nursing mamas are more than welcome to feed their babies in any of the lovely public spaces and eateries in the centre, there is also a Parent and Baby Room on the ground floor where you can relax in privacy while feeding your child if you wish. There’s even bottle warming facilities.

5. The crèche!

Stocked with fun toys and games for kids of all ages, Liffey Valley’s purpose-built crèche is perfect for families with young children. You can rest assured that your little ones are in capable hands, while you enjoy some retail therapy or scoff a huge muffin alone in a café – bliss.

6. Toddler mornings at Pirate’s Cove

Running daily Monday to Friday (10am until 2pm) Pirates Cove, Toddler Mornings are suitable for tots aged between one and four years-old. Toddlers and wobblers are kept entertained and physically active throughout the morning, with craft tables, dolphin swings, Wilma the Whale slide, a soft ball pit and carousel swings. What’s more? Parents can avail of a complimentary tea or coffee per paid admission (€7 for four hours playtime) until 12pm, so make sure to arrive early!

7. The Kids Club Cinema At Vue

A selected kids movie is screened every Saturday and Sunday morning at the Vue Cinema and the tickets are a total bargain; €2 a ticket for 2D film and €3 for 3D films. Adults pay the same price as kids!

8. A chance to indulge your inner foodie

Once baby is fed and dozing contentedly in the pram, why not tend to your own rumbling tummy with lunch or dinner in one of Liffey Valley’s many restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for a cheat day treat or a superfood salad, there are so many options that the choice will be a difficult one. You’ll just have to come back next week and try another…
