Babies experience discomfort as their new teeth come in, leading to fussiness, sleepless nights, and a lot of drooling.
Thankfully, there are several ways to help ease this pain.
Here are some tried-and-true teething hacks that will hopefully bring some relief to your little one:
According to the Mayo Clinic, cold can be very soothing for teething babies. Offering a chilled (not frozen) teething ring or a cold washcloth for your baby to chew on can provide significant relief. The cold numbs the gums, reducing pain and inflammation.
The American Dental Association (ADA) says using a clean finger or a soft, damp gauze pad, gently massage your baby’s gums. The pressure can ease the pain and help teeth break through the surface of the gums.
The ADA also suggests that teething toys made of rubber or silicone are safe for babies to chew on and can distract them from the discomfort. Some teething toys can be chilled in the refrigerator for added relief.
Breastfeeding or giving a bottle can comfort a teething baby. The sucking action can soothe irritated gums and provide a sense of security and comfort, according to the Mayo Clinic.
For babies in significant discomfort, over-the-counter remedies like infant ibuprofen can be used. However, the same clinic also says to always consult with your paediatrician before giving any medication to your baby.
Parenting experts say sometimes, engaging your baby in play or a new activity can help take their mind off the discomfort. Gentle rocking, singing, or a warm bath can also be comforting and provide a distraction from the pain.
Teething is a natural, albeit challenging, part of a baby’s development.
Using these hacks, you can help soothe your baby's discomfort and navigate this phase with more ease.
Always remember to consult your paediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby’s teething process.
