Christmas day is traditionally a day for family bonding.

It’s a time when families gather together having not seen each other in a long time and celebrate with food, gifts and hugs.

In saying that, it’s not always easy to keep the kids engaged without them wandering off to pick up a tablet or mobile phone.

If you want to avoid having your children glued to screens this Christmas, here are three ways to get them involved in the festivities.

Help with the cooking

Food is a huge part of Christmas Day so why not get the kids helping prepare the main festive feast?

No matter what their age there’s something they can help out with whether it’s a teenager peeling spuds or a toddler helping you stir the custard for the Christmas pudding.

If you have time, you could even do some baking on the day with them. Who doesn’t love a gingerbread man after all?

Put on a show

If there’s one thing kids love, it’s to be the center of attention and what better way then entertaining everyone on Christmas day.

It can be anything from a puppet show production to Christmas karaoke or maybe even a game of charades. They can even use the new toys they got from Santa to help stage their amazing Christmas show.

Shared reading

If there’s one festive tradition that deserves a comeback, it’s the telling of a Christmas tale.

Very popular during the Victorian era, families would gather round to listen to someone read a holiday story such as A Christmas Carol.

Why not get children in on the act by getting them to choose their favourite Christmas book and read it aloud for everyone in the evening? It will be a brilliant way to end a fantastic and successful Christmas day.
