Spread the love: What (most) mums really want for Valentine’s Day

Dads, listen up

Sive O'Brien

The most romantic day on the calendar is fast approaching, whether you like it or not. Even if you don’t really ‘do’ Valentine’s Day, try taking a different approach to it. I think mums deserve a bit of romance, and what better time for the perfect guy to show us just how much we deserve it with a thoughtful gift (hint, hint dads).

Psst, this is the stuff that we really want this Valentine’s Day…

Chocolate

Not just any chocolates – put some thought into it; even if it’s just a bar of her favourite chocolate. But preferably a box of nice confectionery that you know she’s going to like. It doesn’t matter if it’s small or expensive; there’s no point buying a big box of chocs if she’s only going to eat a few before the kids destroy them with their sticky fingers.

Wine

Instead of grabbing a bottle of whatever fizz is left on the supermarket shelf, buy her favourite tipple. And don’t just buy Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio because you’ve heard of them; it doesn’t necessarily mean she likes them. Maybe a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc would go down a treat. Or a nice Argentinian Malbec. Even better, book a babysitter so you can go out and have a glass of wine together, just the two of you.

Flowers

It’s the busiest time of the year for florists and you’re seeing red, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a small fortune on a dozen roses only for them to wilt a day later. What’s her favourite colour? What were your wedding flowers? (Ask the bridesmaids if you’re not sure.) Even if it’s a small bunch of daffodils, tie a bit of twine or ribbon around the stems and you’ve got a ready-made bouquet.

Dinner

Going out to dinner is a real treat, but so is having someone cook a nice meal for you at home. If you’re a dab hand in the kitchen, get your cook on when the kids have gone to bed. Even if you’re culinary skills are lacking, there are tons of easy recipes online that you can follow; or brilliant Valentine’s meal deals that you can buy in the supermarkets. Don’t forget to lay the table and light a few candles to set the scene. If you do want to go for a meal in a restaurant, maybe book it for a night other than Valentine’s. Sharing a romantic dinner with 80-odd other people isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

Family time

A walk on the beach with you and the children; a movie night in the house complete with popcorn and blankets; a board game with the family. Whatever it is that you do together, make sure that you keep it just you. Now’s not the time to invite friends or the rest of the family along.

Bed

What’s the greatest gift you can give someone who is sleep deprived? Keep in mind that the early night she is suggesting might just be because she is tired. (Sorry guys.)

Cards

We’re not at the guessing stage anymore – chances are, we know who our admirer is – so forget the question marks and get writing. Whether it’s homemade, shop bought or ordered online, just make sure your card has a lovely message inside. There’s nothing to give away apart from the fact that you think she is the most amazing mum and partner in the whole world.
