Mum pregnant with twins accused of shoplifting by police officer

Louise Carroll

Awkward moment or what?

So pregnant mamas might be accused of having some extra Indian takeout, buying 10 jars of pickles when one has NEVER even eaten pickles before, going a bit nuts with the salt and even craving ice. (Entirely normal behaviour.)

What we most definitely didn’t expect (and neither did this mum) was for a pregnant woman to be accused of shoplifting, just for, well, carrying those babies. (Hilarious, but you know, also quite ignorant of the accuser, if we may say so.)

Well, in Pineville, North Carolina, the above occurred. A 34-week-pregnant Ms Sherell Bates was shopping for school supplies when a police officer asked her to step aside.

He then asked her what was under her shirt (apparently he assumed the giant sphere attached to her abdomen was a perfectly shaped store product.) She replied to the officer by saying;

“Twins. I’m 34 weeks with twins. I’m having a boy and a girl.”

According to ABC7 News, Ms Bates said;

“Initially I thought he was joking, so my response was, ‘Twins.'”

The officer didn’t believe Ms Bates, however, and asked the same question again, which led to Ms Bates lifting up her top a little bit so as he could verify that indeed, she was with child.

In case you’re curious, the shop named Staples, apologised to this mum at a later date. Well mums, if you’re expecting soon, be prepared for all sorts!
