The most popular female baby name worldwide might surprise you

It's a gorgeous one too.

The world's most popular female baby name has been shared and it's one we know and love. Sofia, the variant of which is Sophia, topped the polls across the world and although the name is different in other languages, the result is the same. Naming expert Laura Wattenberg shared the data on The Baby Name Wizard Blog after collating results from 49 countries and found that it came number one in over nine countries. It was also hugely popular in a further twenty countries, coming in either second or third place. This research shows that Sophia, which means wisdom, is a massively popular choice worldwide and Laura spoke to Live Science about the findings:

"It just blew me away that so many different languages and cultures would arrive at the same sound at the same time. I guess that really says something about the way culture is transmitted today".

Statistics collated by the Central Statistics Office in Ireland last year showed that Sophie, very similar to Sophia we think you'll find, was the fifth most popular female name so it's very obvious that the name is a very popular one across the world. However, Laura warned that this means Sophia has reached peak popularity and we may see a downward spiral from here on.

 "Everyone is trying to avoid the number-one name, because they think that's too ordinary, so names rise and fall faster than they used to".
