I was pregnant with my son when I first came across the baby shower concept, and I was suitably thrilled – a party for meeeeeee, what's not to love.
I enjoy any and every excuse for triangle sandwiches and cupcakes, though I noticed some of my (less cupcake-loving) friends were a bit down on the idea, dismissing it as too American (whatever THAT means).
6 SOLID Reasons To Throw Your Pregnant Pal A Baby Shower:
1. Giant Pregnant Bitches Don't Have That Much Else To Do
By week 38 ANYTHING will seem like a bit of fun for the poor water-retaining pregnant person in your life. Install her on a comfy chair and feed her pink and blue foods and get ready for one of the most sedate parties of your lives.
2. The food
The potential for fun with the baby theme is endless.
3. The Cute Games
Decorating babygros is basically a form of therapy, I've found. Although there is always that one hyper-competitive person in attendance whose balloon-adorned onesie is almost ridiculously perfect. Hard eyeroll. It's not a goddamn competition – though I do seem to be getting a bit heated about it, don't I?
4. The Presents
Buying your pal a nice gift pre-baby is a nice reminder to the soon-to-be mother that while for the next few weeks/months/years it's all going to be about the baby, she is still her, and babies don't have to spell the end of nice things. Just don't buy her any dangly earrings, as we all know newborns love to give them a yank.
5. The Fact That It's pretty much the last party ever that'll be all about her
I'm not trying to be that downer friend, who's all "Ugh, after the baby comes your life with be over..." but the fact is that once the baby is out, you're left playing second fiddle to your adorable spawn. Anytime you arrive anywhere sans baby, people (your former friends) won't even bother to mask their disappointment. "Oh, it's just you? Where's the baby?" She needs this party.
6. The Pampering
The more pampering a pregnant person can squeeze in pre-newborn shitstorm, the better. She's got a hectic schedule of nappies, winding, and colic in the coming months so for God's sake throw her a little party.
