Mum gives baby girl an Irish name but is pronouncing it completely wrong

She is pronouncing the Irish name completely wrong

A new mum has given her daughter a beautiful Irish name but is pronouncing it completely wrong.

The new mum decided to call her little one Caoimhe but shocked the medical staff when she said the name out loud.

According to the midwife, the mum was convinced she was saying it correctly but the midwife said she couldn’t be more wrong.

She kept pronouncing the name ‘Kay-OH-me’ but the midwife wanted to interfere.

She opened up about the unusual name on Reddit.

“Delivered a baby today with this name, which is not pronounced in the traditional, Irish way with some variation on “Keeva,” but is instead pronounced “Kay-OH-me.”

“I spent most of the cesarean section contemplating this horror. I finally decided that I could not in good conscience let this happen without saying something.

“On the off chance that she had genuinely never heard how this name was actually pronounced.”

“So after I finished sewing her up, I told her my concerns,” she wrote.

“She was very surprised but decided to keep it how she wanted.

The mum claimed it ‘sounds like it is spelled’ so it isn’t one of those tragedeigh names.”

Irish names are incredibly popular with new parents but many American parents fail to pronounce them properly.

Reddit users called out the mum for dismissing the Irish language.

One also wrote: “I worked with someone who proudly told me their sister had an Irish name!”

“I thought that was wonderful and asked which name and he spelled out cailleach then informed me, “We pronounce it like Kylie.” My jaw was on the floor at this.”

Another shared: “All these traditional Irish names are beautiful – until idiots get ahold of them.”
