Michelle Griffin didn’t want others to miss out on the joys of having a family so she took to Instagram, advertising her “womb for rent.”

Knowing what it felt like to desperately want children of her own, the Australian mum wanted to help those unable to have children. She has since received huge amounts of feedback and heart-breaking stories from thousands hoping to become parents.

Speaking to Sunrise TV, Michelle said,

“Seeing how amazing pregnancy can be as well as the birth, I figured why keep having our own children when we can contribute to another family and help somebody else?

The whole nine months is amazing, the excitement that builds up in that time and having life grow inside you is incredible and so empowering…”

In most Australian territories, the only type of legally recognised surrogacy is so-called ‘altruistic surrogacy’. This is when the surrogate mother does not receive a fee, but the intended parents pay for all healthcare expenses.

Under Australian law, it is also illegal for intended parents to advertise for a surrogate, so Michelle was widely praised for her kind-hearted gesture. She has already made plans to carry the baby of one hopeful couple. She has clarified that she will be a gestational surrogate only – meaning that she won’t have any biological connection to the baby, but hopes to remain friends with the family.
