Solo births are on the rise (and dads are kicked out of labour wards once more)

Trine Jensen-Burke

Giving birth to a baby is no doubt one of the most intimate – and life changing – moments we can experience as women.

The majority of us chose to have someone with us during this process, for support and some words of comfort during what is the most intense few hours of our lives. Usually our partners or mothers, or a close friend.

But according to some new research, an increasing number of women are choosing to go it alone in the maternity ward – with more and more of them banning the father from the birth.

According to the study, by Voucher Codes Pro, the researchers found that a whopping 67% of the women didn’t think that the father’s presence was necessary at the baby’s birth, with over one in five saying that they wouldn’t have the father in the room during labour.1756 pregnant women over the age of 18 were interviewed as part of the study, and were asked who they were planning to have present when they give birth.

Surprisingly, a whopping 24 percent said that they wanted to have their best friend in the room rather than their baby’s father.

The reasons for this varied from not being on good terms with the baby’s father to worries over their partners not finding them attractive after. A few said their partners were simply too squeamish, which led the women to want to bring an alternative birth partner with them to hospital.
