Welcome to week 35 of your pregnancy! This week, your baby is as big as a honeydew melon. Here’s what else you can expect this week.

Your baby

At 35 weeks, your baby is approximately 46 centimetres long and weighs about 2.4 kilograms. The lanugo, that fine body hair, is likely disappearing as your baby’s fat layers continue to increase. Your baby’s lungs are almost fully developed, ready to breathe on their own once they arrive. Their digestive system is also maturing, preparing for that first feed.

You

Week 35, and you’re nearing the finish line! That growing belly might be causing discomfort and even more sleepless nights. Your baby’s size is pushing against your diaphragm, making it harder to breathe deeply. Back pain and swelling in your legs and feet are common at this stage. If you’re experiencing cramping, it could be Braxton Hicks contractions, a warm bath or a relaxation exercise can ease them. Have your hospital bag ready to rock, and make sure you have all the essentials.

Anything else?

As you enter these final weeks, be sure to have your birth plan in order. Discuss any concerns or preferences with your healthcare team. In Ireland, over 25,000 babies were born in 2020, so you can take comfort from the fact that you’re going to be surrounded by people who do this ALL the time. And remember, it’s alright to enjoy some self-care moments and relax as much as you can. Your body is doing incredible work. Take it one day at a time and know you’re amazing.
