Magazine article on waxing child’s upper lip angers mum blogger

The magazine claims it's safe to wax, pluck or cut a child's 'moustache'.

An article on how to tackle a young child’s upper lip hair has attracted the ire of one mum blogger.

The piece was published in Parents magazine under the headline ‘Normal or Not: Hair on a Preschooler’s Upper Lip’.

It states that it’s normal for small children to have hair in the area and that it’s “only a problem when it starts to impact their happiness and self-esteem.”

It also quotes a paediatric dermatologist who says it could be a hormone imbalance.

If not, she recommends cutting the hair with a small scissors so it’s flush with the skin or waxing or plucking the hair as “safe alternatives for kids who can handle the discomfort.”

One US-based mum, who blogs at Sturdy Mom Central, shared an photo of the article on Instagram and expressed her anger at the piece.

“I am APPALLED at @parents magazine for this article stating that it is okay to wax or pluck your PRESCHOOLER’S ‘moustache.’

“The featured picture even makes me angry. What is this teaching our young children about appearances? It is absurd!”

Speaking to Yahoo Lifestyle, she said; “This is in the current issue of Parents magazine. I just received it in the mail this week. I love Parents magazine but I was appalled when I saw this.”

The magazine has not commented.
