The study, released last year, observed the brushing habits of 5,000 children aged between three and 15.
Results showed that approximately 40 per cent of children under the age of six use too much toothpaste when they brush.
Experts at the CDC have said that this can cause damage to a young child's teeth as they are using more fluoride than is safe.
Dental experts went on to say that children who use too much fluoride as toddlers could see their teeth streaked or covered in splotches when they are adults.
Dentists recommend that children under the age of six use a half a pea-sized amount of children's toothpaste when brushing their teeth.Explore more on these topics:
