The annual Aware Christmas 5K is back to kick off the festive season.

Taking place on the 9th of December from 9.30 am, over 2,000 people are expected to take part and raise funds for Aware’s virtual services.

Even though it is due to take place at Leopardstown Racecourse, you don’t have to be there as there is an option to take part virtually.

The event promises festive fun for all with hourly 5Ks, live entertainment, food trucks, kids’ races and play area.

Festive attire is encouraged, and all are welcome from walkers to runners. Each participant will receive a custom medal, which doubles as a Christmas tree ornament, for their efforts.

Speaking today, Aware ambassador and influencer Grace Mongey said: “I’ve always been so passionate about mental health awareness and sharing my journey online.

“One of the main reasons I started therapy almost eight years ago was because I wanted to be a better person for my family and understand my difficulties, so I could in turn teach my children how to have a positive headspace and understand their emotions and feelings.

“I wanted to take part in the Aware Christmas 5K because I think it’s so important to support people who are going through a dark time but also so my family can see how far I’ve come.

“I’ve only started running over the last few months and I’m looking forward to taking on the 5K challenge on the day!

“The chipped and timed race will start at 9.30 am. For those who are less concerned about the exact time of their 5K, there are hourly 5K options thereafter. Participants can select their preferred race time during the registration process.”

Stephen Butterly, Head of Fundraising at Aware said of the event, “As a result of this and other fundraising efforts, Aware provides vital support services for individuals and families impacted by depression or bipolar disorder, as well as offering free positive mental health programmes for adults and senior cycle students nationwide.”

Online registration is open now on the Aware website at a cost of €25 per adult, €60 per family of four and €7 per additional child.
