10 amazing uses for coconut oil that you might not have heard of

Trine Jensen-Burke

Much like kale, coconut oil was just not on our radar until quite recently, and yet now this little multi-tasker has gone and found itself a place front and center in the wellness world. We eat it, fry in it, put it into smoothies and even shave our legs with it.

But much as you already have embraced this wonder oil, which has been hailed for doing anything from curb cravings to increase brain function and boost immunity, we bet there are still things you haven’t quite figured out that coconut oil can do for you. Seriously, we are obsessed with the stuff.

So here you go; ten more ways to use coconut oil – outside the kitchen, that is!

background

1. Calm acne
Acne at any age is frustrating. Now, if you are having severe problems with your skin it might be better to consult with your dermatologist first, but many people have found coconut oil to be of great help in clearing up their skin. The oil is packed with antibacterial properties that help keep skin clean without the need for harsh chemicals that strip the skin of vital nutrients over time. Also, coconut oil is mostly made up of medium chain fatty acids which are easily absorbed into the skin without lasting greasiness.

2. Create a beach-y hair spray
If you’re craving beach blown hair and can’t get to the ocean, coconut oil to the rescue! Add a tablespoon or two of coconut oil to this a spray bottle of salt water, and boom; you’ll look like you just go back from vacay!

3. Remove makeup
Many makeup removers contain harsh chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils. Coconut oil makes an effective and gentle makeup remover that will leave your skin fresh and glowing. It also works well to remove eye makeup.

4. Improve dental health
Have you tried oil pulling yet? It’s an ancient Indian technique used to pull toxins from the mouth and freshen the breath. Coconut oil has many antibacterial properties which reduce bacteria and plaque in the mouth. Oil pulling strengthens teeth and has been shown to help clear gingivitis. Simply swirl a tablespoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for ten minutes in the morning and spit. Done.

5. Relieve sore throats
Next time you get a sore throat, mix a little melted coconut oil and honey to ease the pain. Take this mixture several times a day to soothe the throat.

6. DIY vapor rub
Because coconut oil is solid at 76 degrees or below, it works really well as a DIY vapor rub. Add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil to 1/4 cup of melted coconut oil. Pour into a jar and let cool at room temperature. Cover with a lid and label the jar. Rub around your nose when you have a cold to bring symptom relief and help open the air passages. This can also be massaged into your temples if you have a headache.

7. Smooth skin
Coconut oil makes a great base for homemade body scrubs. Just do as follows: In a small bowl mix up a few tablespoons of melted oil with some brown sugar. Add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil and voila; you have a spa-worthy scrub that is not only great for you, but that also would make a perfect present for your mum or bestie!

8. Diminish bags under eyes
Lack of sleep showing under your eyes? Try some coconut oil! With your finger in the palm of your hand warm the oil and apply under eyes before bed to reduce puffiness and dark coloring.

9. Soothe heartburn
Instead of reaching for pills, try eating 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil to bring fast relief. The oil coats the stomach and soothes acid reflux pain.

10. Clean makeup brushes
Not cleaning your brushes regularly can lead to break outs and skin infections. You don’t have to buy expensive washes, though, just dip the bristles in a little bit of melted coconut oil and use a paper towel to rub the brush until the makeup is off. Rinse in warm water and let air dry.
