Time for a soak… Five amazing benefits of having a bath

... and relax.

Finding time to pee with kids running around can be tricky enough, never mind setting aside 20 minutes for a bath*.

But if you can, do, because it’s actually pretty good for you.

Here are five benefits that have been associated with having a soak in the bathtub…

Helps you relax

The hot conditions make the body – most notably your muscles – relax which means you are more susceptible to falling asleep (which can also be difficult when you have 101 things on your mind).

Refreshing for your skin

Your skin can seriously benefit from a good soak. The hot water will open up your pores which will leave it feeling fresh. This is why baths are suggested for those who suffer from eczema and psoriasis.

Good for your heart

If you have heart problems, please consult your doctor before taking a bath. Studies have shown that a warm (not hot) bath can lower blood pressure and improve circulation but it’s not suitable for everyone.

Combats cold symptoms

Not only is it believed that the steam from a hot bath can ease headaches but it can also apparently open up and soothe nasal passages when you’re feeling run down because of a cold.

Gets you thinking

As well as having some time to switch off or think about you, it is said (by the Alternative and Complementary Therapies journal) that adding sage to a bath can help improve memory.

*Please note that it is NOT recommended that you have a hot bath whilst pregnant, however you can have a warm bath as long as you stick to the following guidelines:

  • You should be able to get straight into the water and it shouldn’t affect the colour of your skin or make you sweat.
  • Test the water with your forearm before getting in and do not stay in for any longer than 10-15 minutes.
  • Avoid using scented products.
  • A hot bath can cause your temperature to rise and/or lower your blood pressure which can be dangerous for your baby.
  • Make sure there is someone on hand who can help you get in and out of the bath and consult your doctor or midwife if you have any concerns beforehand.
