We don’t know about you but the first thing we do when we get up is put on the kettle and throw a teabag or spoonful of coffee into our favourite mug.
But while it might lead to an energy boost, it’s not really what you should gulp down first thing in the morning.
We spoke to nutritional therapist Elsa Jones and she said that the best way to start the day is with a cup of warm water and lemon juice. (Alternatively, you could opt for a glass of cold water with lemon in it.)
Elsa explained: “It can be beneficial to start the day with a cup of warm water and lemon juice as that kickstarts the body in terms of detoxing and cleansing… Hydrating yourself in the morning is key so get a glass of water in too.”
Other benefits are that it’s good for your skin, it makes your breath smell better and it can relieve pains as well as indigestion.
Another must is breakfast because, contrary to what you might think, that first meal of the day can help you to keep your weight under control.
Elsa told us that skipping breakfast usually means that you end up craving foods or drinks that are high in caffeine or sugar later in the day.
She said: “If you go too long without eating, your blood sugar levels can drop further and that can then affect your food choices. Your body will start to crave quick pick-me-ups such as caffeine and high-sugar snacks.
“That’s when you make poor food choices, so what you choose to eat for breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day in terms of blood sugar balance and energy levels.”
