New programme launched to help Irish parents talk to their children about sex

Jade Hayden

A new programme is being launched to help Irish parents talk to their children about sex.

The HSE’s Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme is being introduced to help those parents who still find it difficult to speak to their kids about all things sexual health, well-being, and sexuality.

Research conducted by the HSE showed that many parents still feel uncomfortable talking to their children about the topic.

The resource’s website provides guidance for parents on subjects like unplanned pregnancy, sexual health, and consent.

It also provides sample questions and answers for children between ages 2-4, 5-8, and 9-12.

They includes questions such as “why do I have a willy and she doesn’t?”, “how are babies made?” and “when can you start having sex?”

It also gives sample answers to sexuality and identity based questions like “what does gay mean?”, “why does my friend have two mums?”, and “what does transgender mean?”

These and more sexual health based resources can be found here.
