Colicky baby? Here are some solutions to calm them (and you) down

It's an upsetting problem for parents and little ones alike.

There’s nothing more frustrating than trying to soothe a baby who is fraught and very clearly upset.

Colic is awful because it can have a damaging impact on parents as well. It can shake your confidence, make you feel like bad parent and cause you emotional distress.

Previously we looked at colic and some of the possible causes of the problem. Today we’re going to look at some solutions.

Preventing colic:
While there is no definitive cure for colic, there are certain things you can do in order to prevent bouts of colic in the first place. Like everything to do with your baby, you should always talk to your doctor before you make any major changes in your life or your child’s life.

Get active: Some babies that are suffering from colic respond really well to movement. If your child is inconsolable, try taking it for a walk, rocking it gently in your arms or bobbing around the house while you hold your baby.

Swaddle your child: This is a traditional way of reliving a child from colic. Put a baby blank in your dryer on a low heat and while it’s still warm (be careful it’s not too hot!) wrap it around your baby. The combination of warmth will give your child a sense of security and comfort.

Play music or sing: Some babies with colic respond well to singing or music. Try playing your child some soft classical music, a lullaby or a CD that has nature noises on it. If all else fails, try singing to your baby (no, it doesn’t matter if you can’t carry a tune!)

Massage: Give your baby a mini-massage. Place your child on its tummy and gently rub its back, arms, belly and legs. The sensation of your touch will be a major comfort for your child.

 

How you can cope:

Dealing with a crying child is never easy and many new mothers who have a colicky baby struggle a lot. You can cope by doing some of the following.

Ask for help: Ask your mother, your partner or your sister to take your baby for an hour or two just so you can have a break away from the crying. Even half an hour away from your child could be enough to recharge your batteries.

Talk about it: Dealing with a crying child can be very frustrating and distressing. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up. Talk to someone about how you’re feeling. It will help.

Exercise: Exercise is the quickest way to get rid of any stress you may be feeling as a result of your child’s crying. Try to exercise for at least thirty minutes every day if you can. You can even put your child in its buggy and bring it outside for a walk with you.
