The Genius Way Italians Drink Coffee That We Could All Learn From

Trine Jensen-Burke

When it comes to where to visit for the most amazing food experiences, it is hard to top Italy.

The pizza, the pasta, the gelato, it is just all so much better in Italy than anywhere else. Even the coffee tastes better when you drink it in a little piazza in Rome or under the hot Sicilian sun.

And when it comes to coffee, the Italians treat it with all the seriousness it deserves – which means, if you take a leaf out of their book, you can also wave goodbye to the usual afternoon slump we are all prone to here on our shores.

I first discovered this Italian coffee ritual while on a sun-drenched holiday in Sicily and Sardinia years ago, when the waiter would clear away our dinner (or lunch) plates, and immidiatly ask: “Coffee?”

And don’t even think about asking for a cappuchino – drinking these after 11 am will make any Italian look at you as if you have two heads. No, what he meant was espresso. One single shot, served in a tiny cup (no milk or sugar). This is how Italians end every meal, with the idea being that quickly downing a hot, delicious shot of espresso is the perfect way to lift you our of any carb induced slump, and will keep you energized throughout the afternoon.

Drinking coffee with milk in it, however, be it a latte or cappuchino or whatever, will only serve to fill you up more after a meal and can mess with your digestion on top of it.
