A 70-year-old mum-of-three gave up sugar – and looks like a goddess

Anna O'Rourke

We really admire those mums and dads who make time for the gym and healthy-eating as well as all the parenting stuff.

Because it’s tough as hell to make courgetti and wild rocket pesto from scratch when you’re exhausted and just want to inhale a plate of chips.

So we take our hats off to Carolyn Hartz: hailing from Perth in Australia, she gave up eating sugar 28 years ago and looks pretty incredible for it.

She recently told the Daily Mail that she gave it up in her 40s after becoming “addicted” to sweets.

“We know our metabolism slows down as we get older – it just means we have to take control and make healthier choices and work a little harder,” she also said, adding: “I believe it is very important to be aware of the type of food you eat and the quantity of food you eat.

“Being mindful while you are eating is a huge factor.”

Carolyn turns 70 next month, has three children, and more recently has a load of grandkids too. She has also established her own sweetener company, Sweetlife.

Her statement on getting eights hours sleep a night – “I have done this for most of my life and now the research shows that it is essential for good health” – admittedly makes us go “say what, now?” but evidently it’s working for Carolyn (did she have a nanny?!).

She also cites meditation, and plenty of protein in your diet as being key to ageing well – practices we’re totally on board with.

In short, Carolyn certainly looks fantastic – though it should probably be noted that she is a former model who is definitely blessed with some pretty incredible genes.

As to whether looking so good at 70 is worth shunning cakes, wine, and chocolate for the rest of your life… we’ll leave that one up to you.
