20 high street POWER buys to update your wardrobe this season

Sophie White

Anyone else feeling the new season ‘trenzy’? Ya know, the trend frenzy that is near impossible to resist once the shops start bringing in gorgeous new stock, the weather suddenly has us longing for velvet and wool tights and the twinkle of Christmassy sequins can almost be glimpsed in the near future. The trenzy can be a massive drain on the wallet so we’ve put together this high street hit list to update our wardrobes without a total overhaul.

Fuzzy love:

Fluffy, furry or sheep-like, everyone needs a winter wrap-up with some texture and umph. Also capes are MASSIVE this year so throw on a blankey and basically you’re done.

coats

Fur coat, €79.95 at Zara; cape, €52 at Topshop; fur trim parka, €99.95 at Zara

Dress to impress:

Comfort is key this season. Jersey and wool numbers are chic and cosy (and oh so forgiving). Pair with black tights and ankle boots for a stylish Winter uniform.

dresses

Dress, €63 at Warehouse; dress, €89 at Cos; wool dress, €49.99 at H&M

Zip it or wrap it:

Those Summer-dominating 70s vibes are sticking around through Autumn this year. There’s fringing and sheepskin abound but we prefer to channel a preppy Alexa Chung vibe with a tan suede mini and brogues. This wrap leather mini will perfectly compliment the soft, slouchy, roll-neck knits that we’ll be swathed in for the next few months (see below).

skirts

Tan suedette skirt, €12 at Penneys; wrap leather skirt, €69.95 at Mango

Girls on tops:

High neck is the neckline du jour which is good news for these chilly days. But don’t forget to work in some playful detail like this fringed sweater from H&M.

tops

Roll neck top, €43 at River Island; cream top, €35 at River Island; fringe top, €49.99 at H&M

Be a slouch:

Obvi the skinny jeans will still be our sartorial go-to for the Winter season but we’ll also be slouching around in these uber comfy trousers that are considerably better suited to our packed Autumn schedule of eating choccies and watching boxsets.

trousers

Pleated trousers, €89 at Cos; trousers, €24.99 at H&M; paper bag trousers, €55 at Marks & Spencer

Play footsie:

The style all-stars, Converse, are still going strong this season but for practical purposes we prefer these white leather trainers (no canvas shoe could ever withstand an Irish Winter). A solid ankle boot is also an essential basic, while we just couldn’t resist these fairly EPIC moon boots from H&M which we predict will have incredible leg skinnifying properties when worn with dresses or skinny jeans.

boots

Moon boots, €159 at H&M; Boots, €79.95 at Mango; runners, €39.95 at Mango

Bling thing:

It’s sparkly bling with a punky, industrial edge. That’s a genre-straddling mouthful (and we like it).

accesories

Ear bar, €6 at River Island; bag,€45 at &OtherStories; ring, €12 at Topshop; hook earrings, €10 at Warehouse
