Berkeley balcony collapse victim wakes from coma

Sophie White

Aoife Beary, a student from Blackrock, Co. Dublin was one of the Berkeley balcony survivors who remained in critical condition following the freak incident last month.

The 21-year-old student had been celebrating her birthday in San Francisco when the balcony she was standing on gave way and killed six of her friends and injured six others.

This week, her parents, Michael and Angela, who have been at her bedside at the Stanford Medical Centre in Palo Alto, California, have reported that the young girl has woken from her coma and is no longer in a critical condition.

The family set up the Facebook page Friends of Aoife Beary, to update those at home of Aoife’s progress. They released a statement saying that Aoife has begun to communicate with those around her:

“Aoife is still in the ICU but is no longer on the critical list. She has slowly started to awaken from the induced coma. This process is expected to take some time.”

“Aoife has also started some communication with her parents and the medical team. She has had a tracheotomy within the last week and continues to make progress on her long road to recovery.”

Most of the survivors of the tragedy are slowly recovering. However Hannah Waters, from Castleknock, Co Dublin, remains in a serious condition.

More than €234k has been raised to support the victims and their families, visit the online fund to donate.
