Adele tearfully dedicates BRIT Award to “gracious” son Angelo and her ex-husband Simon

“This album was all of our journey, not just mine.”

Adele’s most recent album has received just as much acclaim as her previous records – but she’s sharing the success of this one with her family.

Thanks to her fourth studio album 30, which she infamously described as being all about “divorce babe, divorce”, the singer took home three of the four BRIT Awards she was nominated for at the ceremony on Tuesday.

Accepting the award for Album of the Year, Adele took a moment to tearfully acknowledge her ex-husband Simon Konecki and their son Angelo for the journey they’ve been on together throughout the split.

“I’d like to dedicate this award to my son. And to Simon, to his dad,” she said. “This album was all of our journey, not just mine, and I’m very proud of myself for sticking to my guns and putting out an album that was about something so personal to me. ‘Cause not many people do stuff like that anymore.

“And my son has been so gracious, so gracious and kind and patient with me over the last couple of years and it’s for him,” she added.

Released in November, the album candidly explored how Adele navigated her divorce – including how she explained it to Angelo. Voice notes of the mother and son in conversation can be heard on the track ‘My Little Love’.

“Mummy’s been having a lot of big feelings recently… I feel a bit confused,” the Grammy winner says in one message, before she explains, “I love your dad ’cause he gave you to me. You’re half me and you’re half Daddy.”

In another message, Angelo can be heard saying, “I feel like you don’t love me”, to which his mum responds, “You know Mummy doesn’t like anyone else like I like you, right?”

Adele previously discussed the “very personal” track during an appearance on q with Tom Power in November, saying she’s not sure how her son will feel about it in the future but it felt important to include.

“He’ll probably go through stages of hating it when he’s a teenager,” she joked. “But it was an important part of the puzzle I was trying to figure out of my life — not the album — so I had to include it.”
