Shanna Moakler opens up about the Kardashian family and their influence on her and Travis Barker’s kids

“I think there was a lot of glitter and fame”

Shanna Moakler has opened up about the impact her ex-husband’s new relationship had on her and their kids.

The actress was married to Travis Barker from 2004 until 2008, and they raised three children together: Alabama and Landon Barker, as well as Atiana, whom Shanna shares with Oscar De La Hoya.

The Blink-182 drummer began dating Kourtney Kardashian in 2021, and they blended their families as their relationship progressed.

The eldest Kardashian sister shares three children with her ex-boyfriend, Scott Disick: Mason, Penelope, and Reign.

Travis and Kourtney have since welcomed their first child together in November 2023, a baby boy named Rocky.

At the beginning of their relationship, Shanna admits she felt there was a degree of ‘parental alienation’.

“When Travis got with Kourtney, there was some parental alienation going on there, where Travis, even when we weren’t together, always wanted to be the ‘super dad’,” she explained on the ‘Dumb Blonde’ podcast preview.

Joining a family with global fame and wealth also influenced the former couple’s children, Shanna told the podcast’s host, Bunnie XO.

“When the [Kardashians] first came around, they were enamoured, just as like, young kids would be enamoured by them.

“I think there was a lot of glitter and fame and they watched them on TV and now their dad is dating one and they’re going to be on the show. And I think they got caught up in that, which young kids would do.”

This, the model said, led to feelings of comparison about what she could provide compared to what her dad and the Kardashians could.

“You know, they’re buying them Prada, they’re buying them gifts; they’re going to these events; they’re meeting Kanye. All this big stuff and I can’t give them that. I don’t have that and I don’t have access to that. I don’t have the money to do that.

“I don’t buy you guys Prada every other week. My house isn’t a mansion like Travis’s. I don’t have a movie theatre. I don’t have golf carts for you kids to drive in.

“He’s fun dad?” Bunnie XO asks, to which the model replied, “Yeah, you know, he’s everything.”

Shanna then confessed that ‘comments’ were made about the apparent differences between the two sides of her children’s family.

“I think comments were made and I think they were influenced. It was hurtful and I’ve had conversations with them since.

“They’ve apologised but I’m not going to take one comment that my angry teenage kid says to me and now, all of a sudden, 24 hours later, I’m a f*cking deadbeat mom, no. They all know I’m not.

“We all know the truth. I go to bed at night, I sleep very well.”

The mum-of-three went on to explain her experience of the media when her ex began dating the Kardashian star, adding that she felt she was unfairly portrayed.

“That sh*t was all being played out in the press, one of the biggest, most powerful families in the world, they’re a media machine.

“They own the f*cking media. I don’t so I just got f*cking hammered. F*ck you, that family. You’re disgusting.

“So I just removed myself so they couldn’t bond with my children over hating me.”

The clip concludes with Shanna explaining what approach she took with her kids during this time and what she said to them.

“Go do what you guys need to do and when you’re ready, I will be here loving you unconditionally and I will be here as your mother and I will wait. That’s what I did.”
