The Emmerdale star passed away peacefully

Emmerdale actor Steve Halliwell has sadly died at the age of 77.

The beloved actor’s family confirmed the heartbreaking news this afternoon.

Halliwell was best known for playing Zak Dingle on Emmerdale.

In a statement, they confirmed the actor was being cared for at a hospice.

They said Steve was laughing until the end and hoped people knew he had “a life well lived”.

“He went to sleep, peacefully with his loved ones around him. He was making us laugh to the end, the most amazing father and grandfather you could ever wish for, family was everything to him.”

His family also took the time to thank the staff at St. James Hospital, as well as the Wheatfield Hospice for their care.

“We would like to thank the wonderful staff at St James Hospital and the Wheatfield Hospice for their love and kindness in his final days. He didn’t want sadness, just to rejoice in a life well lived.”

ITV’s John Whiston said Halliwell was the “father of the show”.

He said the Emmerdale cast and crew are completely heartbroken following his passing.

“Steve Halliwell was one of those rare human beings who was as wonderful off-screen as on. To millions of Emmerdale viewers, he was the brawny but crafty Dingle patriarch who led the clan with a strong fist and a warm heart.”

He also described him as a much-loved friend, as well as the show’s fun mischievous uncle.

“We will miss him enormously,” he added.

Emmerdale fans have been sharing emotional tributes online with many saying he will always be one of the show’s most important characters.
