Victoria Smurfit spoke out about losing her beloved mum
Irish actress Victoria Smurfit has opened up about the harrowing loss of her mother and the final moments they shared together.
The Rivals actress spoke about the loss during an interview on Ryan Tubridy’s The Bookshelf Podcast.
Smurfit sadly lost her mother Caroline in January 2022.
She reflected on the final moment they had together during the emotional interview.
“I just kept saying to her don’t fight it, it’s ok. Up there you’ve got your mum, you got your dad, you’ve got your best friends, you’ve got.. I listed off all the dogs.
“You’ve got so many people up there waiting for you,’ Victoria continued.
“Just look up and just go be free of this body that’s just let you down. Your overcoat has let you down, your spirit will always be. I’ll look after people down here,” she added.
She confirmed her mother passed away in her arms.
“Just go fly, go fly. And she did. She took her last breath in my arms,” Victoria added.
She said the shock of losing her mother hit her hard, especially because she passed quite suddenly.
She added, “Within 20 minutes (of her mum’s death), you’re then sat on a curbside at 4.15 in the morning with a Tesco bag full of your mother’s stuff and clothes and wondering what in the name of Jesus happened there because it was sort of 48 hours from stroke to gone.”
Tubridy fought back the tears as Smurfit shared the heartbreaking story, but listeners praised her for discussing grief in such a gracious way.
