90,000 children and parents will be impacted by creche strikes

90,000 children and their parents are expected to be impacted by the upcoming creche strikes.

The Federation of Early Childhood Providers confirmed they will be striking on September 26th, 27th and 28th.

Childcare providers have called for additional State funding so they don’t have to increase their fees.

They’re also hoping to raise awareness about the increase in creche closures.

However, Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman said the strike is “not warranted”.

He told Newstalk:

“Since I came to office, I’ve significantly increased the investment in childcare.

“In any sector of state spending, that’s a huge increase in a short period of time. With that extra money, I’ve been able to cut cost for parents – we’re able to cut them by an average 25%.”

He added, “I’ve been able to secure a pay increase for childcare professionals – since last September, 73% saw a pay increase, many of them for the first time.”

Mr O’Gorman confirmed that €287 million has been invested in the childcare sector.

Over the weekend, the FECP confirmed a three-day strike will take place at the end of the month.

The protest will be held in Dublin between September 26th and September 28th. Protesters will gather outside Leinster House on Kildare Street in Dublin.

All childcare providers will close their doors for approximately three days at the end of this month.

The Federation of Early Childhood Providers said small and medium creches are under immense pressure and are hoping the strike will raise awareness, as well as increase State funding.

The group also hopes this strike will create a “transformative shift in the early years childcare sector”.

“Let’s stand united, resilient, and unwavering in our pursuit of change. Join us on the 26th of September and be a part of this historic movement. Together, we will make a difference!”
