Teenage boy who pushed girl under Dart avoids detention

Kat O'Connor

The incident happened on April 1st, 2021.

A teenage boy who pushed a girl with his bike at a Dart station has avoided detention. The teenager’s actions caused the young girl to fall headfirst under a Dart in April 2021.

She was trapped under the train, but staff rescued her and alerted the driver of the train.

The incident was captured on CCTV and shared on social media. It is believed the video has been viewed over 100 million times.

The youths were identified via the viral footage, but the boy who hit the teenage girl with his bike has avoided a detention sentence.

The girl appeared in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on Tuesday, July 26th.

She told the judge that none of the boys helped her when she was trapped under the Dart.

She said she couldn’t believe the boy could do something like that and just walk away.

The Independent shared that the boy was discharged from a further count of violent disorder. This was because of insufficient evidence.

Judge Martin Nolan acknowledged that the incident was “terrifying” for the girl, but said the boy did not intend for the girl to fall under the train.

However, Judge Nolan stressed that the boy is responsible for her injuries. He also said the boy purposely pushed his bike towards the girl.

“It was prankish behaviour, irresponsible behaviour but it is highly unlikely he anticipated what occurred.”

The judge said the boy won’t be sentenced to detention because of his guilty plea, lack of previous convictions, and remorse.

He will be given community sanctions.

The case has been adjourned until August 24th.

The young girl said she feels let down by Irish Rail.
