WATCH: The Jedi code is amended to assuage young fan’s concerns Jedi can’t get married

"To be a Jedi is to truly know the value of friendship, of compassion, and of loyalty, and these are values important in a marriage."

Sophie White

According to the Jedi manifesto:

“Jedi do not marry (with some exceptions), in order to avoid attachment and—according to Vergere—so as not to create dynasties of those strong in the Force. However, in many periods of the Order’s history, such as the era prior to Exar Kun and in Luke Skywalker’s reformed Jedi Order, marriage was not forbidden. That being said, celibacy was enforced in many periods of the Order’s history.”

This aspect of the order was troubling a young fan, Colin Gilpatric who decided to write to George Lucas to request that he amend the rules as he wanted to be a Jedi and get married some day. Colin outlined his concerns in this succinct letter to Star Wars creator Lucas:

Dear George Lucas,

I don’t like that a Jedi cannot get married. I want to get married without becoming a Sith. Please change the rule.

P.S. I want to come to Skywalker Ranch please.

Love Colin

The response from Lucasfilm was pretty fantastic:

Hello Colin,

Thank you so much for writing to us with your question. It sounds like the Force is strong with you, and you are showing great wisdom by asking your question. To be a Jedi is to truly know the value of friendship, of compassion, and of loyalty, and these are values important in a marriage. The Sith think inward, only of themselves. When you find someone that you can connect to in a selfless way, then you are on the path of the light, and the dark side will not take hold of you. With this goodness in your heart, you can be married.

We enclosed a few gifts that we hope you enjoy. Thank you again for writing to us.

May the Force Be With You!

Sincerely,
Your Friends at Lucasfilm

Along with the letter, came a bag of swag that made the day of this adorable young Jedi.
