“The decision is controversial but it’s right for them”.
Stacey Solomon has been sharing the reasons behind her decision to take her children out of school and begin homeschooling them in her most recent column.
The mum-of-two has decided that she and her two sons – ten-year-old Zachary and five-year-old Leighton - are going to try homeschooling for the time being after she noticed some fairly big changes in them.
The mum shared the reasoning behind her decision in her column in
The Sun and prefaced it by acknowledging that “every child is different and therefore responds differently to methods of teaching”.
Stacey went on to talk about how her sons have changed in recent years and how that began to raise red flags for her.
“When Zachary was halfway through year two, he began to lose some of my favourite parts of his personality.
“He never worried what people thought of him, he was a happy-go-lucky child, always inquisitive and wanting to know EVERYTHING about everything.
“But he would come home from school embarrassed to make jokes and be silly and he became very quiet and a little sad.
“He explained to me that his behaviours were deemed naughty and disruptive by teachers and not cool by his peers.”
Stacey added that she was not attacking teachers or the school but more the structures that are in place in schools, saying that homeschooling was “always at the back of my mind”.
The
Loose Women panellist says that she gets a tutor in once a week to follow the curriculum in maths, English and science, but other than that, their school day is geared towards what her boys are interested in at that time, from astrophysics to biology to Mandarin.
“Yes, it's controversial and not everyone will agree with me but parents have to make their own decisions. No-one should judge them and you shouldn’t feel judged.
“Ultimately, I have no idea how this relatively new step in our lives will pan out, but right now my children are happy and healthy, enjoying life and learning and that’s all I can hope for.”
