6 foods EVERY new parent should have in the house in the first six weeks

Brought to you  by Aldi.

Every tried to cook the dinner while holding a 7lb bag of potatoes?

No, neither have we.

The experience, however, would be something akin to the very first weeks of motherhood, when your new arrival may become an extension of your (very tired) arm.

Babies are made for cuddling though, so you’ll need a game plan if you want to ensure that you get all the nutrition you need to recover from birth, as well as the energy to be the best parent you can be (on two hours’ sleep).

The trick? Stocking the house with handy foods that can be devoured at any time of the day… and with one hand.

Here are six things to pop in your fridge or pantry before baby arrives:

Smoothie ingredients

Almond milk has a long shelf life so you should always have a carton or two handy. Add in a banana (keep it chopped and frozen in your freezer so there’s no peeling involved) some fresh berries, a dollop of Greek yogurt and half an avocado and you’ve got a nutritious snack to slurp as you feed or soothe a screaming newborn.

Cooked quinoa and canned chickpeas

Having a tub of cooked quinoa and a few tins of chickpeas handy means you can always bulk up a thrown-together salad with some hunger-busting but healthy carbs.

A selection of tasty dips

Whether you’re more or a guacamole gal or a hummus fan, stocking your fridge with great dips is a genius way to ensure you don’t go hungry when you’re battling baby brain. All you need for a filling snack is a carrot or two and a pack of multi grain crackers.

Comfort food

Dishes like cottage pie and pasta melt are not just delicious, they’re also very easy to eat with just one hand. Fill the freezer with your favourites and defrost daily.

Baked potatoes

Aldi’s frozen Ready Baked Potatoes can be kept in the freezer, ready to be popped in the microwave whenever a snack attack hits. Top with beans, cheese or tuna.

Cereal bars

At 4am, even pouring milk into your cereal bowl can seem like too much of an ask. Cereal bars get the job done with minimal hassle. Plus you can keep them in your bedside locker.
