Being a parent can usually be fraught with self-doubt as you find yourself landed with the biggest responsibility of your life: you are responsible for the welfare of another human being.
You fret about their sleeping and eating habits, worry if they're getting enough exercise, if they're happy overall and if they'll grow up to be a good person and reflection of your parenting efforts.
But fear not! There are teeny tiny little indicators that you are already doing a great job, especially when they're small.
Here are 8 signs that you are totally rocking it:
1. You love them
It sounds simple but there have been times when I wondered if I was cut out to be a parent because I wasn't ENTIRELY sure if I even liked the kids. This would usually happen on a day when we were all tired, stressed and everyone was looking for an exit strategy (even the dog!). But when you set the hard days aside and get one of those unexpected hugs from your little one and your heart swells a little bit, you know: I really love them like I've never loved before.
2. They have a home with you
Whether you own, rent or are in the process of moving - your kid's home is wherever they are with you. So long as they feel secure and know where they belong in the world, they are doing alright.
3. There is a family routine
Routine is key with kids and not because it affords us parents complete control over their every move, but because it really helps our kids feel secure and safe in the knowledge that they understand what is probably likely to happen next in their little day.
4. Their bellies are full
Food forms a major part of every family day because keeping our kids nourished and healthy is a major priority.
5. You sacrifice for them
You know you can't get to do everything you want to do on a whim ever again but you're ok with that. Some day you might get back to that dance class or get to go out with friends two weekends in a row but for now.. you know it's all about the kids.
6. They are becoming like you
Our son is almost five and I can see the beginning of him becoming more and more like his dad and I. Some of it isn't great - I know his hyperactivity is probably coming from me, for example - but some of it is really lovely. For example, I pride myself on great manners and his are generally really good too. He says 'Excuse me' when he wants to interject and holds the door open for his grandparents. Swoon!
7. You can't wait to see them
I really love seeing my kids every morning. Now, not if they've kept me up all night, but if we've all had a night's sleep and I get up a little bit before them. The big 'Good Morning' hug and kiss I get when they get downstairs is second to none and I live for it.
8. You know there's no one else like them
I sometimes look at my kids and know that my partner and I are truly the only ones who know how beautiful, special, hilarious and loving they are. No matter how many times you tell a 'funny story' about your kid to another person, they will never be as interested as you are in them. They will always and forever be special to you, and that makes you an amazing parent.
