This airline safety tip works to keep kids safe in any situation

Laura Grainger

So simple, yet so effective…

Now that the kids are off school and getting up to all sorts of summer adventures, finding ways to keep an eye on them at all times can be hard.

Though water safety is often prioritised, children need supervision no matter where they are or what they’re doing.

In an Instagram Reel, Susie Allison of Busy Toddler shared a safety tip inspired by airline pilots that helps ensure supervision is always covered. It’s a tag-team tip that comes in handy whether you’re with a partner, grandparents, aunts and uncles or a fellow mam-pal.

Susie says she and her husband, a former pilot, have been using the system since almost the day their firstborn came home from hospital and that it “works wonders” for their family. “It keeps the kids safe, makes sure supervision is specified, and helps us never just assume the other adult is watching out,” she said.

“When airline pilots need to make a change of controls in the cockpit, the pilot currently flying says: ‘Your airplane.’ This signals a change of controls is coming. The other pilot must respond back with ‘My airplane,’ acknowledging that they are now flying the aircraft.

“When one of us needs to make a change in supervision or go do something different or help someone else, we announce it and make a verbal change: ‘Your Kate & Matt.’ And we wait for the other to respond ‘My Kate & Matt.’

“This is the verbal and acknowledged shift of supervision duties for those two kids from one parent to the other. THIS SYSTEM WORKS.”

Though this tip is extra handy to ensure your kids are supervised around water, it works for pretty much any environment. Whether they’re at the pool, beach, park or playground, you’ll know that when you need a break from watching them, whoever you’re with is ready to take over.
