5 Awesome Train-inspired Kid’s Birthday Party Ideas

Sharyn Hayden

Planning your little darling’s birthday party can be great fun if you have the energy and a bit of time for creativity.

As mum to a very typical four-year-old boy, I have, to date, organised and hosted a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party, a Bob The Builder party AND a Lego themed party.

Despite the fact that his birthday isn’t until September, my very organised young man likes to put ‘orders’ in for his birthday themes quite early on in the year.

“Spiderman cake!”, he’ll roar at me in January.

“Transformer Rescue Bot games!” he’ll demand in March.

“All my friends and all my teachers!” he’ll decide around April, which is generally the point at which I decide that we’ll ‘neglect’ to tell him when his actual birthday is and just take him swimming for the afternoon.

But this year, it’s all about trains and so, I’ve collected some really lovely train-inspired party ideas for you to share with your little choo-choo fanatic.

1. Invites

There is no end to the cute invites you can find for inspiration online – just check out this gorgeous Thomas The Tank Engine one from Etsy. First-class for the VIP invitees, of course!

2. Balloons

How cool is this? You can create a little train track with simple black tape and use colourful balloons to create a tunnel. Making a DIY balloon arch is WAY easier than you think and there are lots of online tutorials to help you!

3. The Cake

You can either take your kid’s favourite train and add cute cupcakes in a line behind as the carriages (my personal choice) OR you can get extra creative like the one above and REALLY impress your birthday boy or girl.

4. Costumes & Party Favours

Now, this is taking party prep to the max. IF you can handle the noise, what better idea than to give each of the kids coming to the party a little ‘Train Conductor Pack’. The ones above have a hat, cool bandana and a whistle. Now you know what noise I’m talking about!

5. Edible Train-shaped Treats

Cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, sandwiches – as long as they are in the shape of a train, you are onto a winner. We just love these custom-made individually-wrapped cookies above and your train-obsessed child will too!
