The best thing you can do for the environment? Have fewer children

Orlaith Condon

Apparently, the best way to help the environment is to have one less child.

A new study which looked into ways people can cut down on their carbon emissions found that having fewer children was the most effective way.

Published in Environmental Research Letters, the study looked at the impact different actions would make on the CO2 levels and found having one less child would result in a reduction of 58 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year of a parent’s life.

It is said that carbon emissions must reduce by two tonnes per person by 2050 in order to prevent severe global warning.

Other actions that made a big impact included selling your car, avoiding long flights and going vegetarian.

All of these actions were found to reduce the emissions more than commonly-known actions like recycling, using low energy light bulbs and drying washing on the clothes line.
