‘Lighthouse parents’ defend decision to let young kids out alone

Parents who follow the ‘lighthouse parenting’ trend have defended their decision to let their children out at night.

The parents, Sammy and Jason, see no problem with letting their kids Pepper (10) and Jude (6) go to the beach alone.

They explained their controversial decision on the parenting show Parental Guidance and said: “It’s not possible for us to be there all the time, so it’s important we teach them to fend for themselves.”

“We can’t focus our attention on each individual kid, which means we have to let the other kids have their own freedom and their own space. So we’re happy for the two older ones to go swimming by themselves,” they continued.

“It’s an opportunity for them to showcase how independent they can be, and give them some trust as well.”

‘Lighthouse parenting’ is when a parent creates a balance between love and introducing limits for their child. The aim of the parenting technique is to ensure that the child is safe and respects their parents, but also feels nurtured.

They tend to give their children more freedom because they won’t always be there so it helps them “fend for themselves”.

The parents added, “We’re happy for the two older ones to go swimming by themselves.

“It’s an opportunity for them to showcase how independent they can be, and give them some trust as well.”

What do you think of ‘lighthouse parenting’? Is it a step too far or is it acceptable?
